Toronto police are investigating an aggressive exchange during a protest at the Eaton Centre

Toronto police say they are investigating an interaction between a protester and another citizen during a pro-Palestinian protest at the Eaton Center Sunday night.

A video of the protest, which went viral online, showed chanting protesters being crushed outside the entrance of Zara fashion store.

In the video, some protesters, wearing black face masks, are seen verbally engaging with another party in the mall. In the video, one protester tells someone, “I'm going to put you on the floor,” and threatens to put someone “six feet deep.”

The other side of the exchange is not heard.

While a number of officers were in the video, Toronto police said in a statement that they did not pose a threat to themselves.

“We can confirm that the protester and another citizen in the mall exchanged words, which you can see in the video that is being shared, and officers separated them,” Toronto police said. “The officers never made any threats and we are investigating the incident.”

TPS said officers used their training to deescalate the situation, which came as many shoppers flocked to the mall to buy gifts on Christmas Eve.

Last week, Zara released promotional images for its new jacket line, which some said referred to the Israel-Hamas war. He also issued an apology, explaining that the campaign was conceived and photographed before the war.

However, since then there have been a series of protests outside stores dedicated to the Spanish fashion brand in Toronto and elsewhere.

“In situations like this, when tensions are high and people, including the public, are large, officers must make the best decision at that time with everyone's safety in mind,” police said in a statement Monday. About 150 demonstrators entered the mall.

Violent demonstrations surrounding the Israel-Hamas war have been regular in the city for weeks, some targeting local businesses owned by Jews or with ties to Israel.
