More than a month after being released on parole, construction tycoon Antonio (Tony) Accurso was arrested and put back behind bars for violating one of the conditions he was ordered to honor.

Accurso, 72, was paroled and released from a federal penitentiary in March after beginning to serve a four-year prison term in a Laval city corruption case.

Police in Regi de Lac de Montagne arrested him at his home on Tuesday night.

“We arrested him on an arrest warrant at the request of the Correctional Service of Canada because his parole was suspended,” Jean-Philippe Labbe of the police force confirmed Wednesday. “The case is now in the hands of Correctional Services Canada.”

In 2018, Accurso was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a rigged bidding scheme involving former Laval Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, other officials and dozens of contractors seeking construction contracts from the municipality.

Accurso appealed the conviction and sentence and lost. He was due to begin serving his sentence last summer after the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear his case.

Because the crimes were committed between 1996 and 2010, Accurso benefited from accelerated parole consideration, which was later revoked, allowing him to be eligible for parole after serving one-sixth of his sentence.

Among the conditions he had to honor were not to associate with anyone with a criminal record, not to lead any businesses and to provide a detailed financial report to the parole officer.

According to the Journal de Montréal, Accurso spoke with one of those convicted in the corruption case.

Accurso's home in Do-Montagne and the homes of some of his relatives have been the target of arson and gunfire since 2022.
