Shooting in downtown Toronto: one dead

Toronto police say a 30-year-old man was killed in a shooting on a downtown sidewalk Thursday morning while cleaning iron bars.

A 36-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were also taken to hospital with serious injuries but survived, police said Thursday morning.

Police say it is too early to say if the shooting was targeted, but there were many people on the street at the time and they are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Full details to come. Below is an earlier story:

One person is dead and two others are in hospital with serious injuries after an overnight shooting in downtown Toronto's fashion district.

Police said they responded to Queen Street West and Portland Street around 2:36 a.m. to a call of a shooting outside the establishment.

Police later confirmed that one of the victims died of his injuries in hospital.

Little is known about the suspects, but police said they fled in a dark vehicle.

Yellow police tape cordoned off many businesses on Queen Street Thursday morning, and police said the area was on lockdown while they investigated the fatal shooting.
