US lawmakers may ban popular video app

What would you do if TikTok was banned?

That's what CBC Kids News asked children in Calgary, Alberta.

It may seem like a tough question, but US lawmakers are debating it.

On March 13, the US House of Representatives passed a bill requiring ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, to sell the app or face a ban.

The bill must still pass the US Senate to become law.

If the bill is ultimately passed, ByteDance would have to sell TikTok within 180 days or TikTok would be banned in the US.

There are currently no plans to ban TikTok in Canada.

However, Canada's federal government said it ordered a national security review of the popular video app in September 2023.

The federal government also asked its employees to install the app on their work smartphones in February 2023.
