Raleigh calls out Blue Jays manager after game-winning HR

As Cal Raleigh stepped to the plate to end the 10th inning, Toronto Blue Jays fans had to feel uncomfortable.

The Seattle Mariners backstop has emerged as a certified Jays killer throughout his four-year MLB career and only added to his legacy in Toronto on Wednesday afternoon.

Batting against right-handed southpaw Tim Mayza, Raleigh laced a first-run slugger into the Mariners box in right, sparking a five-run 10th inning.

It was the 27-year-old's ninth regular-season home run against the Blue Jays and 10th, including his two-run home run in the first inning of Game 1 of the 2022 AL Wild. – a series of cards.

Raleigh entered Wednesday with a career 1.043 OPS against Toronto, and his eight home runs were the most he's hit against any team in the majors.

Raleigh was upset about last year's comments

Last season, after a two-homer game against the Blue Jays in April, manager John Schneider was asked about Raleigh's performance against his team and said, “He's not too hard to go against when you do it.”

When asked about those comments after Wednesday's game, Raleigh called out the Jays' bullpen.

“I know a lot of guys in this league have beef with him. So his comments are not surprising,” Raleigh said Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish. “I don't have much to say. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all if you don't want it to come back to you.”

Since making his MLB debut on July 11, 2021, only Aaron Judge (14) and Anthony Santander (11) have hit more home runs against the Blue Jays than Raleigh.

His extra-inning blast was also the 24th home run allowed by Toronto pitchers this season, tying the franchise record for most dingers in the team's first 13 games, matching the 1978 Blue Jays.

This year's team got off to a slightly better start than the Blue Jays, who started 4-9 and finished the season 59-102.

Still, there's no arguing that the 2024 Blue Jays would be better off not letting the long ball go forward — against Raleigh and the rest of MLB.
