Police warn Manitobans about Interac wire transfer scam: 'Extra caution needed'

Police warn: Interac wire transfer scam is on the rise in Manitoba.

Manitoba RCMP say victims receive an email that appears to be a legitimate Interac electronic transfer.

When the victim clicks on the link and enters their bank information, it gives the fraudsters access to their bank account, police said.

“Fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated, so extra caution is needed before accepting an electronic transfer,” Manitoba RCMP said in a press release.

Police advise those not expecting an electronic money transfer to be cautious, check email carefully and when in doubt, don't click on links.

Setting up an electronic transfer autodeposit is another way to prevent fraudulent transfers, says Mountie.

“Be mindful of what you share online, including personally identifiable information that hackers can use to access your accounts,” police added.

Victims of fraud are asked to contact their local police.
