Memorial service honors Toronto firefighters

Firefighters who lost their lives “protecting life, property and the environment in Toronto” were honored this morning at the city's annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The ceremony began at 11 a.m. at the Toronto Fire Service Station, 339 Queens Quay W., 334 Spadina Avenue East.

During the gathering, Mayor John Tory, Fire Chief Matthew Pegg and members of the Toronto Fire Service, representatives of the Toronto Professional Firefighters Association and the Canadian Firefighters Foundation made speeches and laid wreaths.

The names of the 21 firefighters who died, along with the date of their deaths, have been added to the Memorial Plaque, which commemorates the 319 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1848.
