Manitoba's Muslim Community Fasted

Manitoba's Muslim community will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

“We only fasted for a month. It's one of the pillars of Islam,” said Sheikh Ould Moulaye, spokesman for the Islamic Community of Manitoba.

To celebrate this event, Muslims in the province pray, make sweets and spend time with their families.

Moulae said there were often large-scale celebrations; however, due to the Israel-Hamas war, they are scaling things back.

“We cannot stop thinking about what is happening in Gaza today, where our brothers have been fighting for six months,” he said.

He said there are many opportunities for people outside the Muslim community to participate in events and services.

“We are sure that most of the problems we face are due to lack of knowledge and lack of communication between us,” he said.

“When people come to an event like this and see people praying peacefully with their families, with their children, I think it brings them a little bit closer to everybody.”
