Luminato Toronto announces first round of programming for 2024

Toronto's Luminato Festival returns from June 5-16, 2024, offering music, dance, performance art, theater and many opportunities for audiences to connect in the creative spirit. The first details of the team became known today.

Art lovers can find Luminato performances and installations in parks, galleries, transit stations and elsewhere.

“Luminato produces a once-in-a-lifetime, inclusive arts experience that showcases the absolute best of our city, region and country,” says Luminato. Celia Smith, CEO of Toronto's Luminato Festival. “As a city-building festival, we create environments that inspire, connect and start conversations that bring about positive change in our everyday lives.”

Luminato Festival 2024 in Toronto

Many offerings cross genres and disciplines in a diverse palette of performances and installations.

Music

We Still Sing… Missa Afro-Brasileira: A Syncretism of Voice and Dance, Nathaniel Dett Choral.

On June 11 In Koerner Hall, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Canada's first professional choir specializing in Afrocentric music, celebrates 25 years in a multi-artist performance. In a talent show, the usual distinction between sacred, secular, popular and classical music is blurred. Measha Bruggergosman-Leewith a dancer/choreographer BaKari I. Lindsay & AFeeree project.

Theater

Age is a feeling Written and performed by Haley McGee

Age is a Feeling is a show that is never the same twice, written and performed by Dora Award-winning Haley McGee. The main theme of the play is our relationship with our own mortality, as the show highlights the important moments in our lives and the possibility of change while we are still alive. Presented by Soulpepper Soho Theater and Haley McGee Productions in conjunction with Toronto's Luminato Festival at the Youth Center. From May 29 to June 16.

MAIN | Written by Jeff Sobelle

Luminato presents the Canadian premiere of Jeff Sobelle's interactive theater work HOME. Through the magic of illusion, choreography, construction, live documentary and music, he builds a house and then makes it a home through life's ups and downs. Takes place June 13-16 at the St. Lawrence Center for the Arts.

Dance

Dancer of the year Trayal Harrell

The North American premiere of Tryal Harrell's Dancer of the Year presents the artist's journey as an emotional and moving experience for audiences. American dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell's work has been presented in Europe and North America and South America, often combining visual arts. No familiarity with dance is required to enjoy this performance, which asks the audience to look at themselves in a way that most would not admit. African Party – Supa Rich Kids by Oulouy

Visionary choreographer Ulowi directed the futuristic show that pays tribute to Africa in dance, fashion, mime, music and performance. A dancer, choreographer and artistic director born in Côte d'Ivoire and based in Barcelona, ​​Ului is a fixture on the urban dance circuit. The play will take place June 8 at the St. Lawrence Center for the Performing Arts

Fine Art/Installation/Performance Art

Dance/ Ipásskaa | Terrance Hole

Raised on the Kainai Nation, Terrence Hoole's mother, Maxine Weasel May, makes dancing regalia for her family. Hole's photography captures the detailed regalia in motion, from the Elk Tooth Dress to the Jingle Dress, creating a dynamic visual display. The exhibition will be exhibited June 5-16location not yet announced.

I'm from Reykjavik | Sonya Hughes

On June 7, 8, 11 and 12 Across the GTA, (exact locations yet to be confirmed), Sonya Hughes his house will be built and dismantled in each performance. As she performs part ritual, part sculpture, and part protest, she asks her audience to erase the lines between Us and Them, find community, and rethink our relationship to space and time.

INTERMEDIATE | curated by Banded Purple

Art is everywhere and can be a part of our daily lives. This is the basis of the curated program SPACED Striped purple. After paying the TTC admission fee at select stations (shown below), participating artists strive to show that beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places.

*Note: Selective TTC stations include: Kennedy Station, Spadina Station, Finch Station, and York University Station.

Evanescent | Atelier Sisu

Art meets architecture in this evocative piece that emphasizes playfulness and not taking life for granted. A large-scale piece of public art is bound to end up on multiple social media accounts.

*Note: Evanescent Bay will be shown at Arnell Plaza, Brookfield Place and First Place Canada in central Adelaide. From June 18 to July 30after the festival.

Interactive

Luminato in the square

David Peko Square From June 7-16, Luminato Central offers a series of free, outdoor, family-friendly programs that include concerts and other performances and events, food and markets.

RAVE | Created, co-directed and performed by Me Time

RAVE is a celebration of dance, music and storytelling curated by DJ The Founder. It is a unique experience that combines advanced technology with dance rhythms and story. It's a journey of self-discovery that you can join on the dance floor. No experience necessary. Co-developed and co-curated by !Kona, and produced by Outside the March and The RAVE Institute in association with the Luminato Festival of Toronto, the RAVE location is (of course!) confidential, with admission information yet to be announced. runs from June 13-16preview is on June 12.

Circus

360 ALLSTARS | Onyx Productions

360 ALLSTARS is an international hit, an urban circus coming to Toronto's Luminato Festival for its 10th Anniversary World Tour. Their performances include BMX, basketball, break dancing, acrobatics, drumming and more. Amazing craftsmanship meets incredible skill, speed and sound in a circus that inspires street culture. Running June 15 and 16 according to Youth Theater.
