Tota appeared before a judge in a Longueuil court Wednesday via video conference, a provincial police spokesman said.

Faucher was identified by a relative, and family members mourned his loss on social media.

Quebec provincial police said Wednesday that investigators were questioning the man as a person of interest before announcing charges.

On Tuesday, local police were called to an apartment building on the outskirts of the city by someone concerned for the woman's safety and found her body.

Provincial police said her body showed signs of violence, but an autopsy will be needed before a cause of death can be confirmed.
