Canada's roughest city is in Ontario: survey

According to an unofficial poll, the rudest and most polite city in Canada are both located in Ontario.

Online tutoring platform Preply surveyed more than 1,500 Canadians who have lived in 44 cities for at least a year.

The informal survey asked participants how often they see acts of disrespect where they live based on 26 categories, which were then calculated into the city's average “rudeness” score out of 10.

According to an informal survey, two of the three roughest cities in Canada are in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Vaughan, Ont. 8.05 and Brampton, Ont. 7.05 in third place. According to Preply, the average rudeness score is 5.22.

Vaughan earned a high spot because he was too 'swallowed' on his phone in public and didn't wave gratefully when another driver let you join his lane.

Other Ontario cities are the roughest, with Windsor in fifth, Thunder Bay in sixth and Sudbury in ninth.

While the GTA holds the top spot for hosting the roughest cities in Canada, it also takes the crown for having the most polite city in the country.

Markham, Ont. It is considered the most polite with a score of 2.91, which an informal survey says may be due to its cultural diversity. Chatham-Kent, St. Catharines, Oakville, Kingston and London also cracked the good list.

Preply also found that Canadian cities swear and apologize the most, and Burlington ranks first in both categories.

Here are the scores for the GTA cities:

  1. Vaughan, 8.05
