'Designed to strangle': Mayor hits back at proposed bill to give province control over municipal-federal agreements

Premier Daniel Smith says the Provincial Priorities Act (Bill 18) is intended to challenge the federal government's overreach of provincial jurisdiction. // Shutterstock

Mayor Jyoti Gondek is responding to the Provincial Priorities Act introduced by Premier Daniel Smith. At the press conference, Gondek said proposed legislation that would allow the province to oversee municipal-federal agreements would delay funding and increase costs and uncertainty for municipalities across the province. If passed, the new law would require any agreement between the federal government and an Alberta city, school board, university or other provincial institution to first be reviewed by the provincial government.

This is reported by City News this law already exists in Quebec. “Albertans are not interested in the virtue signaling coming from Ottawa and the roadblocks that come with it. We're interested in our fair share of federal funding,” Smith said.

According to CBC, According to Gondek, the law is “designed to stop the ability of Calgarians to put their hard-earned tax dollars back into their communities.” Meanwhile, Con. Dan McLean told the CBC he had no problem with the report.

Now that spring finally seems ready to stick around, you might want to check out this park

Central Commons Park is located at 4410 University Drive NW.

It may be available year-round, but each season offers a different experience on the University District's three-acre campus Central Commons Park opened last year. Calgarians enjoy this park with an ice rink and stage area in the winter, picnic tables, barbecues, and more in the spring, summer, and fall. We spoke with Civitas landscape designer Jessica Doig about the new park and what being outside can do for you after a long winter.

How does being outside affect your mental and physical well-being?

As landscape architects, we advocate spending time outside and using public spaces. Getting vitamin D from the sun, grounding, and getting fresh air, the benefits of spending time outside are endless, both physically and mentally; but it allows you to strengthen and build relationships. As humans, we are part of nature and it is important that we reconnect with it whenever possible. Getting outside year-round helps you feel connected to where you are and see the place in all its forms.

What do you hope people take away from this space?

I hope people can make this place their own and experience it as a special place to visit with friends and family. I hope it will be enjoyed by its community and become a place full of activity all year round. The layout of the park and community was a big part of the All Seasons design.
