CAIP payments have been sent to one million people in Canada

In the next few days, millions of people in Ontario will receive money from the government.

That's because the next installment of the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP) will begin disbursing from the federal government on October 14.

CAIP is a tax-free payment designed to help offset the cost of federal pollution assessments. It follows the federal government's move to set a national price on carbon pollution in 2019.

Earlier, CAIP was given as a repayable loan required annually, but as of July, the government has switched to quarterly payments.

The first installment was sent to Ontarians on July 15 and covers the amount retroactive to April 2022.

Payment is only available to people living in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The amount residents receive depends on their marital status and the province they live in.

In Ontario, the program offers an annual credit for:

  • $373 per person
  • $186 for spouse or common-law partner
  • $93 per child under 19
  • $186 for the first child in a single-parent family

There is also a rural supplement of 10 percent of the base amount for residents of small and rural communities.

Residents do not need to apply for CAIP. Instead, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) determines who is eligible based on income tax and benefit returns.

Income tax and benefit returns must be filed annually to receive CAIP payments.

If the government does not receive your money within 10 days, contact them.
