An end-of-year off-campus Bermuda Shorts Day party draws the ire of Calgary neighbors

Several related parties prompted police to block off part of the residential streets on Tuesday as students celebrated the last day of school.

Students estimate about 300 people attended the annual Bermuda Shorts Day Party, which began at 11 a.m. and ended with a mostly afternoon storm.

On Wednesday, empty beer cans, red individual cups and other trash left over from the party were strewn across the lawn and along both sides of Unwin Road NW.

Police set up a command center at nearby McMahon Stadium, and officers monitored the party throughout the afternoon.

One neighboring homeowner said the dam party should not be allowed to drive on the public road, saying the damage and nuisance was too much.

Throughout the 2000s, the U of C student union held campus events to celebrate the end of classes, but has scaled back in recent years amid the pandemic and rising costs.
