A York Region teacher has been charged with sexual assault

A York Region teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a student in his private music class.

York Regional Police said Wednesday they arrested a Richmond Hill man on two counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault.

The service said in a statement that the alleged attacks were directed at a minor who attended private lessons and a youth orchestra where he was an instructor.

He identified the suspect as 30-year-old Tyler Resnick.

At the time of the charges, Resnick was an art teacher at Maple Leaf Public School in Newmarket, Ont., the York Regional School Board confirmed. In a statement to CTV News Toronto, he said the charges are against a student at the school and there is no reason to believe the teacher has been removed from the classroom.

His employment status at the board was not immediately known.

“We are aware that these allegations are concerning to the students, their families and the school community,” the statement said. “Right now our focus is on supporting students and staff, including through social work and psychological teams.”

Police say the investigation is ongoing and investigators believe there may be additional victims.

“York Regional Police urges anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault to report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offenses and offenders can be prosecuted after the date of the offence,” they said.
