A resident has been accused of pepper-spraying a suspect who broke into a Scarborough home

Toronto police say a man broke into a Scarborough home last month, assaulted the resident, pepper-sprayed him and took his money.

Officers were called to the area of Kingston and McCowan roads on March 27th at approximately 2 a.m. for a robbery call.

According to police, the suspect entered the residence wearing a mask and knocked on the door before kicking it open. Once inside, he began going through the victim's property and demanded cash, they said.

The suspect then punched the victim in the head several times and at one point sprayed him with pepper spray, police said.

He left the scene with an unknown amount of cash.

The severity of the victim's injuries was not disclosed.

Members of the Toronto Police Apprehension Team began an investigation following the incident and identified the suspect.

On April 9, investigators searched the suspect's place of residence and arrested him.

They said officers found items of “evidential value” related to the investigation during the search, including a can of pepper spray.

As a result of the investigation, police charged 31-year-old Benhur Davit Woldey of Toronto with robbery with an offensive weapon, breaking and entering, willful concealment, willful administration of a harmful substance and violation of probation.
