A 31-year-old man has been charged with barricading himself in an Oshawa residence with a firearm.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded to a call of an armed man at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday at Kaiser Cross, Colborne St. territory.

The accused was seen taking a weapon to an apartment complex. Police confirmed the accused's entry and set up a perimeter around the compound. Initial attempts by negotiators to get the accused to surrender failed.

Police found that four people were inside the unit.

Police said that during the arrest of the residence, officers saw two firearms thrown from the defendant's balcony, and police recovered two firearms, both of which were airsoft models.

After some time, the negotiators successfully removed all residents from the apartment unit.

Five people, including the accused, were arrested without incident.

The apartment unit was searched and a third firearm was found buried in a mop bucket. This firearm was also found to be an airsoft copy.

After further investigation, four of the housemates were unconditionally released from police custody.

Treven Green, of no fixed address, was charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, obstructing a peace officer and failure to comply with a release order.
