WATCH: Suspect arrested for assaulting Toronto police officer

New footage obtained by CTV News Toronto shows the arrest of a suspect who attacked an officer responding to a carjacking in the North York neighborhood.

The attack happened around 10 p.m. Monday in the area of Yonge Street and Kingsdale Avenue, south of Finch Avenue, according to police.

Officers from the 32nd Police Station said they were called to a report of five men attempting to steal a car, and one of the officers suffered a serious leg injury during the arrest.

Video of this arrest was provided by a local business on Kingsdale Avenue east of Yonge Street.

In the three-minute video, the male suspect can be seen running, then being chased by an unknown person and knocked to the ground. Moments later, an unmarked police car pulls up at a stop sign near where the suspect is lying on the ground.

Two officers get out of the car and begin arresting the man.

Three marked police cruisers arrived at the scene. The officers jump out before the shooting ends.

On Tuesday, Toronto police announced two arrests in connection with the incident.

They said one suspect was apprehended at the scene of the attempted carjacking and the other was taken into custody after a short foot chase.

The Toronto Police Association (TPA) told CP24, which represents about 8,000 civilian and uniformed members of the force, that the injured officer will need surgery but will be OK.

“He's in good spirits, but his injuries are serious,” TPA President John Reed said.

Oluwafemi Oladekoye, 19, of Woodbridge, and Haydon Courtney, 19, of Toronto, were charged with attempted larceny over $5,000 and masking.

Oladekoye was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Both defendants are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

The incident on Monday night was one of two incidents where police officers were allegedly attacked.

A second Toronto police officer was assaulted Monday evening

A second Toronto police officer was injured in an unrelated attack in the downtown area on Monday night at 11 p.m.

The incident occurred in the entertainment district near Queen and Duncan streets.

Police believe a man approached uniformed officers walking in the area and spoke to them before attacking them.

The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was arrested a short time later with the help of a member of the public, police said in a press release.

Fabian Quiones Penaloza, 31, of no fixed address, was charged with assault on a peace officer in connection with the incident.

“He was actually on paid duty and on his way back to the station, a man came up to him and asked if he was a police officer … and then punched him in the face,” Reid told CP24.

He applauded the citizen who came to help.

“These days, we often end up where things are happening and everyone actually takes out their cameras, which is important to me. But it's great to see a member of the public helping this officer,” Reid said.

Reid continued that every time a police officer goes out into the field, they “understand and accept that they can get hurt and/or actually die.”

“Our hope is always that nothing like this happens, but these types of injuries are not uncommon for officers,” he said.
