Matthew de Grood returns to Calgary ten years after killing Brentwood Five: report

A man convicted of killing five youths at a Calgary house party nearly 10 years ago is living in Calgary after suffering a psychotic episode. Global News report.

Matthew de Grood is now reportedly living in an undisclosed group home in the city.

Zachariah Rathwell, 21; Jordan Segura, 22; Caitlin Perras, 23; Josh Hunter, 23; and Lawrence Hong, 27, were stabbed to death by de Grud, then 22, on April 15, 2014, at a homecoming party in Brentwood.

De Grood was found not criminally responsible for the murder in 2016 after it was discovered that he suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia.

Since then, he has been under psychiatric supervision, first in Calgary and then in Edmonton.

De Grud's lawyer filed a complaint Appeal to the Alberta Review Board In 2022, de Grood asked for more freedom so he could better engage with society.

The parole application was denied because the man still poses a significant security risk.

Last year, his lawyer told the Alberta Court of Appeal the board's conclusion was unequivocalonce again asked to be released, which was refused.

In September a An appeal was made to the Supreme Court of Canada. The judges dismissed the appeal on March 14, 2024.

De Grud most recently lived in a group home in Edmonton.
