Winnipeg police: Man dead after officer-involved shooting

Manitoba police have launched an investigation after a 59-year-old man died after being shot by police.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) said it initially received a warrant under the Manitoba Mental Health Act on Feb. 8 to detain a 59-year-old man and take him to a hospital for an involuntary medical evaluation.

Officers said they made several attempts to apprehend him in the following days, but met with “negative results.”

On Tuesday morning, officers went to a man's home in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue. They met him at the door and said he had a nervous demeanor and a crowbar.

When the officers approached him, he set off the fire extinguisher at them before entering the home, police said.

Officers called in a tactical support team. After they arrived, they tried several times to talk to the man, who had barricaded himself in a second-floor bedroom, officials said.

Police say the man released the fire extinguisher again in a tactical support group.

Eventually, the man came out of the bedroom and confronted the police officers with a large, edged weapon.

Police said they discharged their weapons and hit the man.

Officers said they administered first aid to the man using chest compressions and tourniquets.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died.

The Manitoba Independent Investigations Unit was notified by WPS and has taken over the investigation.

This is an evolving story. Full details to come.
