TTC trains run 15 km/h slower due to reduced speed zones

Some TTC riders may have noticed slower-than-usual rides this week thanks to the introduction of “reduced speed zones” on the subway system.

According to the TTC, the zones were implemented after sections of the track on both Line 1 and Line 2 were determined to be in a “good state of repair.”

“Reduced speed zones are a preventive measure to reduce the stress on the roads until repairs are carried out. We are actively working to address the slow speed zones and they are being fixed gradually,” TTC spokesperson Adrian Grundy told CP24.com.

Trains in reduced speed zones run between 15 and 25 kilometers per hour, much slower than the 40 to 50 kilometers per hour they normally travel.

A list of reduced speed zones is regularly updated on the TTC's website, Grundy said.

The TTC also said it will shut down Line 1 at 11 p.m. on several days this week and is following to perform road work due to these reduced speed zones.

“We encourage TTC customers to check the TTC website before traveling and allow for additional time depending on where they are going,” added Grundy.

“The website has the latest information on where delays are occurring.”

When asked how long those delays would last, Grundy said they would “continue in the coming weeks.”
