The video shows the SUV driving in a separate bike lane

A Toronto lawyer and cycling advocate is calling on the city to do more to crack down on drivers who ignore the rules of the road after a video emerged showing an SUV driving in a separated bike lane in Regent's Park.

The video, captured around 8 a.m. Saturday near Dundas and Sumach streets, shows a black SUV with its hazard lights on for about a minute before exiting the bike-only lane.

“This video shows the disregard for traffic rules and the vulnerable safety of road users. With hazard lights on, this driver continues to ride in the bike lane despite having ample opportunity to get out of it,” David Shelnutt, a Toronto lawyer and cycling advocate, told CP24.com in a statement.

Shelnutt, who took the video anonymously and shared it on social media, said the city needs to do more to protect cyclists and pedestrians.

“We are calling on the City of Toronto to implement automated enforcement with cameras. We're asking the city to report on the citizens being reviewed and review the citizen tickets in New York, Austin, Texas and other municipalities, focusing on equity and revenue-oriented fines that increase with each citation,” he continued.

City officials told CP24.com that the incident was not a “police response issue.”
