The IIU would like to speak to a potential witness to the death in custody

Manitoba's police watchdog – the Manitoba Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) – says it is continuing to investigate the custodial death on October 15, 2023.

Around 10:50 p.m., Winnipeg police officers responded to the area of Broadway and Sherbrooke Street after receiving a report of a man who was depressed and had gotten into a vehicle.

Arriving law enforcement officers found the man and arrested him.

The man then suffered a medical condition and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The IIU says investigators would like to speak to a possible witness who may have seen the incident on nearby CCTV at the time of his death.
