The first rescuers rescued the injured worker from the construction site

First responders rescued an injured worker who was trapped at a construction site in southeast Calgary on Wednesday.

Fire and EMS were called to Legacy Grove SE after a worker was injured while pouring the foundation of a home under construction around 1 p.m.

“When our crews arrived on scene, we found a foundation area at the construction site where some debris had fallen and impacted the worker,” said Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Stahl.

“We had to first use the ladders on the ground to get the stage stabilized and then to stabilize the patient.”

As of 3:00 p.m., the worker was pulled out of the pit and his condition is normal.

According to Stahl, the place was a basement, so the depth of the collapse was about three meters.

The rescue was difficult for the first rescuers because of the open trench around the foundation.

“That's why access is difficult because we don't have immediate access to the opening points in this foundation. We had to build bridges with ladders in several places and use it,” Stahl said.

Emergency personnel first went into the pit to help the patient. Then the technical rescue team took him out of the house in a basket and with the help of an aerial device.

The Labor Protection and Safety Service is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
