OPUS Cards Reload: New App Coming

An app feature that will allow transit users to reload their OPUS cards via smartphone is currently in development, and Montrealers are encouraged to help test it.

This feature will be added to Chrono, the official trip planning app for Greater Montreal transit authority ARTM.

The beta version of the service will be tested from February 19 to March 17. Participants must complete a survey and be entered to win one of five $100 prizes.

More information about the process can be found here.

OPUS cards are stored-value “smart cards” used for public transit in Montreal and Quebec City. They are usually recharged at charging stations (such as Montreal metro stations) or at service counters.

For some time, the only way to reload an OPUS card at home was to buy a personal card reader that connected to a computer.

According to the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), these card readers are no longer available and the online top-up service that accompanies them will be discontinued “in 2024,” when this new smartphone app will be replaced.
