Man shot by officers in latest fatal police incident – Winnipeg Free Press

A man was shot and killed by police officers in the North End Tuesday morning in the latest fatal standoff with Winnipeg police.

Police said at a press conference Wednesday that they took a 59-year-old man into custody Thursday under the Manitoba Mental Health Act and ordered him to be taken to a hospital for an involuntary evaluation by doctors.

Officers tried to locate the man several times in the following days but were unable to, the Winnipeg Police Service said.

A man answered the door to a home in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue around 7:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said he had an “agitated demeanor and was carrying a crowbar” and pulled out a fire extinguisher at approaching officers.

A heavily armed tactical support team was called in and attempted to make contact with the man, police said.

Officers forced their way into the home and found the man had barricaded himself in a second-floor bedroom. He again pulled out a fire extinguisher on officers, WPS said.

“A short time later, the man came out of the bedroom and was confronted by officers armed with a large edged weapon,” the report said. “During this encounter, officers discharged their firearms and struck the male.”
