Carman Manitoba death: Manitoba child advocate calls for more support

A Manitoba child advocate is calling on the provincial government to better support young people affected by partner violence against a man accused of killing five family members, including his three young children.

Sherry Gott said her office is devastated by the death and extends its condolences to family, friends and the southern Manitoba community where the victims lived.

Gott's office released a report that in 2022, a child in the province will witness an incident of intimate partner violence by police every two hours.

The report includes recommendations such as increasing funding for child-focused family violence shelters.

Ryan Howard Manoakisik faces five counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his common-law partner, their three children, as well as his partner's 17-year-old niece.

Gott's office said it is reviewing the death to determine if the group will launch an independent investigation into what services the family received.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published on February 14, 2023.
