A Winnipeg police incident resulted in a tragic death following a mental health intervention

WINNIPEG – NEWS – On February 8, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service was ordered to detain a 59-year-old man under the Manitoba Mental Health Act for a mandatory medical evaluation. Although several attempts were made to execute this order, the police action did not bring the expected results.

On the morning of February 13, North District General Patrol officers responded to a call at a residence in the 200 block of Magnus Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered a man armed with a crowbar, showing signs of agitation. Things quickly escalated when the man allegedly used a fire extinguisher on officers and then defended himself inside the building.

The story intensifies

The escalation led to the deployment of the Tactical Support Team (TST) to safely defuse the situation. Attempts to communicate with the man who surrounded him in a second-floor bedroom were unsuccessful. The confrontation escalated when the man attacked the TST members a second time with a fire extinguisher.

Officer-involved shooting

The standoff escalated when a heavily armed man came out of the bedroom and confronted the officers.

In response, the police discharged their weapons and seriously injured the man.

Officers administered emergency medical care, including chest compressions and a tourniquet.

The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and later died of his injuries. This case highlights the complex challenges law enforcement faces in situations involving mental health crises and underscores the need for continued dialogue about how to handle such sensitive encounters.
