A Calgary family is asking for help after a 16-year-old girl was hit and run

A Calgary family is seeking support from the community after a 16-year-old girl was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in January.

Kira Barriskill is in life-threatening condition after being involved in a hit-and-run incident on January 28th.

“It was an emotional battle,” said Chris Barriskill, Kyra's father. “I wish that for other families.”

He was released from Foothills Medical Center on Friday.

Barriskill spent five days in a coma and came out of it on his own. His father said he suffered a brain injury, damage to his right eye, broken bones and a fractured right shoulder.

He also suffered from blood clots and was just beginning to speak.

“It's been very difficult for us,” Barriskill said. “He doesn't remember anything from the accident.”

According to a Calgary Police Service statement, just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 28, “a collision occurred at the intersection of 22 Avenue NE and the 100 block of Pinemill Mews NE.”

It is assumed that a quarrel broke out between the driver of the car and the 16-year-old girl.

While the driver was holding the car, she tried to leave the scene and ran over it.

“The driver and other passengers checked on the pedestrian, but then returned to the car and left the scene,” the report said.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, came forward to speak with police.

After the stroke, the family had to take time off work to provide 24-hour care for Barriskill.

“I have to help him up and down the stairs,” said his father. “We won't be able to operate for at least another month or two.”

To help the family cope with the financial burden of medical and other expenses, Kira's aunt, Haley Waynes, has set up a GoFundMe campaign.

“He's just kind, he's sweet, he's shy, he's a very shy kid,” Waynes said. “It's really sad what happened to him.”

The Calgary Police Service said the investigation is ongoing.
