Montreal man in hospital after apartment fire

A 66-year-old man is in critical condition due to smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in an apartment building in La Petite Patrie overnight.

The Montreal Police Department (SPVM) said the fire started at 3:30 a.m. in a building located on avenue Christophe-Colombe, near the intersection of rue Belanger east.

Residents of about 10 apartments in the building were evacuated.

Residents were able to re-enter the building at the end of the night after firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) were able to extinguish the blaze.

The investigation was handed over to the SPVM firefighting team.

“Fire investigators are currently on scene,” SPVM spokeswoman Caroline Chevrefils said.

A security perimeter was set up in the area, but it has since been lifted.
