Love Blooms in Winnipeg This Week – Our Communities

Fort Rouge

I'm always interested in how certain traditions started. Specifically, when this month started, I thought about the true meaning of Valentine's Day?

According to the good old internet, St. Valentine was a clergyman in the Roman Empire who defied the emperor's orders and secretly married couples to save their husbands from war duty. He was martyred and buried on February 14, and this date has been a feast day celebrating love since the eighth century.

Life is busy and sometimes we need a little help with planning, so here are a few ideas to help you out:

A few years ago my wife and I made it a tradition to go to a hockey game on V-Day, and this year our Winnipeg Jets are hosting the San Jose Sharks on February 14th.

From intimate acoustic sets to classical dance to live jazz ensembles, Winnipeg's cultural scene is ready to get couples in the Valentine's Day spirit. Some of you will enjoy the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's presentation of Romeo and Juliet from February 15-18, choreographer Rudy van Danzig's version of the classic ballet of two star-crossed lovers. The rest of you can enjoy the City and Color concert at the Canada Life Center on Friday, February 16.

Couples looking to indulge in culinary experiences can explore Winnipeg's diverse restaurant scene. Many eateries in the city offer special Valentine's Day menus featuring delicious dishes to ignite the senses. Whether you're a fan of cozy bistros or fine dining, there's something for every couple to enjoy.

Assiniboine Park offers an evening of botanical bliss at The Leaf After Dark, featuring a relaxing, adults-only atmosphere complete with live musical entertainment. Wine, beer and wine plates are available at the Mediterranean biome counter and can be used in all biomes.

Check out Eventbrite for other events like the Valentine's Paint Party on February 16th at The Healing Arts Collective.

Whatever you choose, you know the flowers cost twice as much, so maybe you should save your money for the popcorn (or more) at the Jets game.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.
