From February 19th, public holiday parking in Toronto will not be free

Toronto Police will begin implementing paid on-street parking on all statutory holidays starting February 19, starting with Family Day.

Generally, tickets are not issued on these holidays due to prior preferences based on parking regulations and operational factors.

But the change was made in response to the city's evolving needs, police said in a news release Monday.

“Street corridors, bike lanes, CaféTO and other infrastructure projects highlight the need for increased parking enforcement,” the report said.

Police also said demand for parking has increased significantly in Toronto and the increased charge will address the growing competition for limited road space and the need for efficient parking management.

Historically, police have not enforced parking laws on statutory holidays, however, there is no legislation exempting those days, so the change is consistent with existing bylaws that allow enforcement on statutory holidays.

Money collected from parking tickets is monitored and collected by the City of Toronto.
