CUPE 1978 Ratifies new agreement with Greater Victoria Housing Society

VICTORIA, British Columbia — CUPE 1978 members in the Greater Victoria Housing Society have ratified a new five-year agreement that will provide improved working conditions for CUPE members as well as improved housing services for the community.

CUPE 1978 President Tom Benjamin said: “We are pleased with the results of the respectful and collaborative approach that the union and management have taken in this round of negotiations.” “Working together, we were able to find common ground, address concerns and collaborate to find solutions,” he added.

The five-year deal calls for annual wage increases of 4 percent in 2024 and 2025 and 3.5 percent in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Starting in 2027, there is an option to reopen the wage discussion if the BC Consumer Price Index exceeds 5. percent last year. The deal also includes an immediate $1-an-hour raise for minimum-wage workers.

Other major gains for members include increased vacation entitlements, improved health benefits and RRSP contributions, and reimbursement for the use of personal vehicles at work. The deal also includes enhanced leave in the event of death, family liability and domestic or sexual violence.

“CUPE 1978 members are proud to provide housing services in Greater Victoria and we will continue to work with employers to serve the community,” added Benjamin.

CUPE 1978 is a constituent local with approximately 1,400 members on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, including workers at the Metropolitan Regional District, Vancouver Island Health Authority, West Coast Parks and Recreation Society and Housing Society of Greater Victoria.
