Conor Timmins of the Maple Leafs is out with mono: Keefe

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Conor Timmins has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, commonly referred to as “mono.”

Head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed the news on Tuesday. Timmins, 25, has played in a total of 16 games this season and has missed the last four.

Toronto Maple Leafs lineup for Tuesday, February 13th

The Leafs will be without assistant captain Morgan Rielly on Tuesday night, who faces the possibility of a league-long suspension for a peer review. Rielly hit the Ottawa Senators' Ridley Greig in retaliation for a slap shot into the empty net with 5.1 seconds left in the team's game Saturday night. He is scheduled for a hearing on the matter on Tuesday.

Defenseman Mark Giordano, who missed practice this morning, has been cleared to play Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues, Keefe confirmed before Tuesday's game. Giordano missed Saturday's game against Ottawa after suffering an injury against Dallas last week.

Ryan Reaves, a regular skater, was not on the ice for this morning's practice, but will play tonight. Forward David Kampf will also return to the lineup for tonight's game.

Ilya Samsonov will start Tuesday's game in net. When Martin Jones left the ice for unknown reasons, Dennis Hildeby of the Toronto Marlies was called in to support Samsonov.

Conor Timmins conceded a penalty

News of Timmins' illness comes just weeks after Seattle Kraken forward Brandon Tanev was fined the maximum amount allowed by the league's Division of Player Safety after an investigation. A fine of nearly $3,000 was agreed upon in the first period of the Jan. 21 game.
