Four local companies will square off in the latest backyard construction at the 2024 Calgary Home & Garden Show, Feb. 22-25 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park. HC Forest Products is offering a “Backyard Wars” show feature, where attendees are invited to vote for their favorite backyard display while digging up a few of their ideas.

This year's contestants are Calgary Lawn Solutions, Project Landscape, Premier Portable Buildings and Backyard Canada. Each recreates a small yard, trying to develop a project and outshine its competitors. Project Landscape was in the backyard battleground in 2023 and will step up its game in 2024, says office manager Alison Atherton.

“This year we pay attention to our partners Belgard. Our entire stand is made in two different styles of Belgard bricks. “We are building two different styles of brick fences and a fire pit,” he says.

Project Landscape, one of Calgary's largest residential landscape companies, adds an elevated pergola. To up the ante, a $50,000 yard renovation will be raffled off. Vouchers will be available online at the Backyard Wars feature or on the company's website.

The company specializes in landscape projects such as patios, retaining walls, decks, landscape lighting and water features.

A relatively new rival, Backyard Canada, could be stiff competition. Founded in 2020 when COVID-19 is throwing everyone out into the fresh air, the company sells products that help homeowners activate their yards throughout the four seasons. It includes play equipment such as outdoor ping pong tables, kitchens, hot tubs, saunas and cold waters.

“Our goal is to get you thinking about some of the products you can put in your yard, not just the landscaping aspect,” says managing partner James Sharp.

Canada's backyard display will feature an outdoor sauna and cold plunge, both used as a hot/cold bath therapy called the Nordic Cycle. Extreme temperature changes stimulate blood circulation, relieve muscle and joint pain, and improve blood flow to the skin.

“Saunas have been a big growth area for us, and now cold plunges seem to be the new thing. Another new product is snow-melting mats, so you can create a perfect path for your hot tub or sauna,” says Sharp.

Four exhibitors will each compete for a $1,000 cash prize or free booth space at the 2025 Home & Garden Show. Details on how to vote are posted in the HC Forest Products Backyard Wars feature at the show.

HGTV personality Scott McGillivray headlines the home and garden show and will be joined on the main stage by home and design experts. Presentation topics and times are listed on the website. Save $2 per ticket by purchasing online in advance.
