Break and enter shooting victims as Central Alberta praises RCMP response

CARSTIRE – Owners of Silver Willow Sports Club are praising first responders for their quick and professional response to the attack and shooting at the facility in the Carstairs area on February 9.

At least one shot was fired at a vehicle containing one of the facility's owners, who responded to the site when a security alert indicated someone was at the business, police said.

Josh Day's car was hit, but luckily he was unhurt.

Police later arrested Calgary residents, an adult man and an adult woman, who now face dozens of charges in connection with the incident. The man's charges include attempted murder.

Josh's mother Gwen said: “We are grateful to the Didsbury RCMP and the police dogs, the ERT Emergency Response Team.” Albertan. “Also local volunteers Carstairs Fire and Ambulance Services for their excellent work. The quick response time was really something. We felt very well supported and protected.”

“We are extremely grateful to God for protecting our family and the entire neighborhood during last Friday's incident.

“No one was injured. It all ended as expected. We hope that the criminals will be caught and justice will be served.”

It is the first time to enter the facility, he said.

The Day family founded Silver Willow Sports Club in 1988 as a family-owned and operated business.

“After 35 years in business, this is our first major breakthrough. Business damage was minimal. “The alarm system and security cameras worked well,” he said.

“Our son was at the business within a couple of minutes after the alarm went off at 5am and the cameras showed two masked men in our building. “This caught the thieves off guard,” he said.

After the shooting, police ordered residents in the area to shelter in place while they searched for the suspects, who fled the scene on foot and were later apprehended.

“It was a stressful five hours before the end,” he said. “We believe it helped to contain the offenders on the property until a special response team arrived and convinced the two to surrender peacefully.”

Kyle Nechiporenko, 37, is charged with attempted murder, willful discharge of a weapon, failure to comply with a probation order, possession of a firearm without a license, failure to comply with a firearms prohibition order and indictable conduct while wearing a mask. trespassing and driving without a license.

He was remanded in custody pending a Feb. 14 court appearance in Calgary.

Soleil Venas, 20, of Calgary, is charged with possession of a firearm without a license and failure to comply with conditions of release.

Nechiporenko and Venas were jointly charged with theft of a firearm, introduction of a dangerous weapon (bear spray) into a public place for the purpose of theft, use of a firearm in the commission of an indictable felony, use of an imitation weapon in the commission of an indictable felony, and theft. Under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and possession of breaking and entering tools.

The pair, along with a third man, have been linked to burglaries and burglaries at several Calgary-area golf clubs and Water Valley Saloon.

Various RCMP detachments in the southern Alberta district investigated break-and-enters at golf courses and other businesses in several counties around Calgary in January and February before the charges were announced Monday. The Cochrane Crime Reduction Unit has been assigned a Jan. 30 investigation.
