A psychiatrist who treated a mentally ill Quebec man who killed a provincial police officer is hearing a coroner's inquest today.

Brouillard Lessard was shot and killed by police minutes later at his apartment in Louisville, Que., about 100 kilometers northeast of Montreal.

Dr Mark Tannus, who ran Brouillard Lessard for several years before the attack, told today of an incident in November 2021 when a man's mother called worried that her son was suffering from mental illness.

Tannus says he spoke to him on the phone and determined he was not dangerous, but a few days later, Brouillard Lessard attacked the concierge at his apartment building, breaking his jaw.

Practitioner Gehan Kamel expressed concern that the inquest heard for the second day in a row that Brouillard Lessard's parents had raised concerns that had not been addressed by authorities.
