A man has been charged with shoplifting from a Winnipeg store while babysitting

A 31-year-old man is accused of shoplifting while babysitting in Winnipeg's North End.

A security guard caught a man stealing candy at a store on Main Street near Boyd Avenue around 8 p.m. Monday, Winnipeg police said in a news release.

The man threatened the security guard, put the stolen items in the boy's backpack and ran away from the store, police said.

An hour and a half later, law enforcement officers found the suspect with a child about a block away. When police tried to arrest him, the man was uncooperative, and officers used a Taser to take him into custody, the report said.

“The police seized a knife and an air gun from the man,” they said.

The child was not injured during the incident and was taken care of by his mother.
