Winnipeg police are speaking out about an altercation that left officers injured over the weekend

Winnipeg police have released new details of a long-running standoff in the northeast that left three officers shot and killed.

The incident began Friday morning when patrol officers were called to a home in the 300 block of Boyed Avenue for a report of an armed robbery.

Police said three men forced their way into the home, shot a 40-year-old man and fled.

He was taken to the hospital in unstable condition, where he was later upgraded to stable condition.

According to the investigators, the suspects allegedly took a 25-year-old woman by force during the robbery.

Early Saturday morning, police learned the missing woman was at an apartment building in the 200 block of College Avenue with one of the suspects involved in the robbery.

“There were multiple people in the residence and there were multiple firearms in the residence,” Chief Danny Smith said at a news conference Monday.

Officers of the main patrol police and a tactical unit arrived at the scene and evacuated the neighboring rooms.

The two suspects, a 46-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, left the residence after being directed by the tactical support team.

They were arrested.

The 25-year-old woman who was allegedly kidnapped also left the house, and police confirmed that she was not injured.

Smith said the woman was not abducted and was found out after she decided to stay home.

Police barricaded themselves there, believing the two men were still inside.

“Negotiators made several attempts but were unable to engage the suspect in any contact,” Smith said.

Around 9:40 a.m., CS gas was injected into the tactical unit.

Shortly after, several shots were fired from the door and the adjoining wall of the suite into the corridor of the apartment.

“Members of the tactical unit were in the corridor. “Three members of the team were in the corridor when they encountered shells,” Smith said.

Shots were also fired through the window at the tactical vehicle parked outside.

A group of police in the corridor retreated to the stairwell, and two officers returned fire as they retreated.

The team regrouped in the stairwell and soon the man in the suite was given away.

He was arrested.

A K9 unit was deployed and found another person hiding inside the suite. He was also arrested.

A 12-gauge shotgun, a .22-gauge shotgun and ammunition were found in the room and taken as evidence.

Jeremy James Kaisias, 43, of Winnipeg, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a controlled substance.

The remaining three suspects – a 50-year-old man, a 46-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman – were charged with drug and firearms offenses and released.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

Smith said the three wounded officers were all shot with a shotgun — one in the thigh, one in the arm, and a third officer in the chest and thigh.

“All were treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries and all went home that night.”

Smith said police are still investigating.
