Police in Toronto will set up paid street parking during the holidays

Recently, drivers will no longer be able to park for free on Toronto's streets on statutory holidays.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) has announced that starting February 19, 2024, officers will begin enforcing on-street parking on certain days.

In a news release, a TPS spokeswoman wrote that the parking enforcement department did not use paid on-street parking during past public holidays due to legal and operational choices, and noted that the change was “in response to our growing needs.” a city where the demand for parking has grown significantly.

Additionally, TPS says the city needs open space to honor streetcar corridors, bike lanes, CaféTO and other infrastructure projects.

“This change only applies to on-street parking operated by the Toronto Police Service's Parking Enforcement Unit,” the spokesperson wrote.

“This is a quick decision by TPS to provide on-street parking. Historically, this has been the practice of non-performance, but there is no legislation specifically exempting statutory holidays from performance, and this change is consistent with existing legislation allowing performance on those days.”

On-street parking rates are monitored and collected for the City of Toronto.
