Menkes' Whitfield Moss rose above the level in the park

At the corner of Front and Sherborne streets in downtown Toronto, Whitfield began to take off. Developed by Giannone Petricone Associates, Menkes Developments and Core Development Group, this 39-story mixed-use condominium project has been upgraded following our latest update. Located at 33 Sherbourne Street, the podium is now taking shape alongside integrated heritage elements.

The January 11 northeast view below captures Whitfield as he rises above the street-level warehouse. A red and white tower crane dominates the site, its boom extending into the work area. Construction is underway on the lower levels of the podium, with the second floor taking shape on the east side.

Overseen by GBCA Architects and beginning to be demolished in 2022, the two-story 19th-century heritage facades at 33 and 178 Front Street in Sherburne—the Whitfield, Perlman, and Goldberg buildings, respectively—will be stabilized and incorporated into the new building. . The north, west and partial south facades of the Whitfield Building are preserved, reflecting architectural details that contribute to the character of the St. Lawrence Heritage Conservation District. New windows of the original design are installed near the end of the process.

A shot from a nearby balcony on February 2 gives an overview of the project. Construction workers are clustered around a central area rich with pipes and fittings before pouring massive concrete. Where the slab is already cast, wooden forms form the future layout of the walls and columns that will support the rising structure.

In a recent photo, we see more of the concrete slab being poured, and the spread of building materials, from layers of plywood to rebar grids, shows the progress of the site. Red fences at the edge of the building ensure access and safety of workers.

In the last photo below, Whitfield facing northeast is the King + Condos completed in 2016 to the north and the nearing completion of Time and Space condos to the south. The former also has a historic facade, in this case a former 19th-century hotel not visible in the picture, while the latter's U-shaped layout and volumetric complexity contrast with its neighbour. Below, the first two floors of Whitfield's catwalk were well underway, with wooden formwork, materials and crew on the third floor. Ultimately, there will be an 8-story podium that will feature horizontal brick bands that wrap around each floor slab.

Scheduled for completion in December 2025, Whitfield will reach 130 meters and accommodate 484 units.
