Markstrom was named the NHL's first star of the week

Jacob Markstrom – the mainstay of the Flames for the 2023-24 season – was named the NHL's first star of the week.

Markstrom has led the Flames to three straight wins since the All-Star break, going 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals against and a .939 save percentage to lift his team (25-22-5) to three. Final playoff points in the Western Conference.

He made 21 saves in a 4-1 win over the #2 Boston Bruins on February 6th. Markstrom then stopped 37 shots, including 15 in the final frame, in a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils. February 8. He finished the week with 35 saves, including 16 in the third period, in a 5–2 win over the New York Islanders on February 10.

“I don't think it's just after halftime,” head coach Ryan Huska said of his netminder. “He's been like that for us for most of the year. He allowed us to win when our team play wasn't where it needed to be. He came back with some attitude or some fire. in it and it fits perfectly with what it does.

“I will say, I think (Goalies coach) Jason LaBarbera has done a great job with him and our other goalies this year and working with him and finding areas to build confidence in, but also push them. I think he did a great job with Jake.

The 34-year-old Markstrom has a 17-13-2 record with a 2.54 goals against, hitting a season-high four starts on Jan. 27 (1.50 GAA, .954 SV%, 1 SO). average, .915 save percentage and two shutouts in 32 total appearances this season. That includes a 16-7-1 mark (2.38 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) in 24 games since Nov. 7 following a 1-6-1 start to the season (3.03 GAA, .897 SV%, 0 SO). ).
