Five people were taken to hospital after a fire at an apartment in Winnipeg

A fire at an apartment building on Furby Street in Winnipeg sent five people to hospital on Sunday.

The Winnipeg Fire Department was called to the scene in the 0 to 100 block of Furby Street around 3:20 a.m.

When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Crews were told that several residents may be trapped inside.

Firefighters rescued the residents, according to the fire service, five people were taken to the hospital.

Winnipeg's emergency social services team has been deployed and about 30 of the 40 displaced people need help finding a place to live.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
