Emerging black filmmakers uncover the latest docs in the absolute Canadian series

DESCENDANTS OF THE HOUSE
Director: Chelsea Newey
Descendants of the House is an exploration of the Jamaican community in Toronto, specifically the Little Jamaica neighborhood of West Eglinton, and its evolution over time. This heartfelt story highlights the significant contributions Jamaican people have made to Toronto's culture and celebrates the persistence of Jamaican culture after migrants remade areas of Canada to resemble “home.”

BECAUSE YOU WERE
Director: Gabriel Rogers
Black Canadians aged X and their immigrant parents reflect on the cycles of racism and poverty that stereotype their parents as absent from childhood sporting and arts activities and lacking support instead of deep commitment.

INTRODUCTION TO PERFORMANCE
Director: Ahlam Hasan
Welcome to the theater school. Lessons include: how to speak, move and be human on stage. Explore the changes as black students struggle in Eurocentric institutions that are not designed to thrive. What is it like to graduate from drama school with your own voice?

THE LAST SON OF PANAMA
Directed by Jadiel Dowlin Lewis
The Last Son of Panama tells the origin story of Emmy-nominated actor, director and director Jadiel Dowlin Lewis, who shares his experiences of being one of Canada's smallest immigrant groups: the Panamanians. With great culture comes great responsibility, Jadiel sets out to find like-minded Panamanian-Canadian creatives who support a black representation of the superhero. But against Jadiel, will he be able to find…?

REMEMBERING ME
Directed by: Abigail Whitney
See never-before-seen family footage as mother and daughter track down long-forgotten memories.

BEING A MANSA
Director: Ivan David Ossa
A young African Canadian faces the consequences of choosing creativity, art and freedom over the ideology of his parents.

Absolutely Canadian is a one-hour national series featuring documentaries and unscripted programming that tell the unique stories of communities across Canada. All programs are produced locally and feature the work of independent filmmakers from each region. CBC is working closely with independent filmmakers from across the region to produce this series.
