Cockroaches and mice force Calgary nursery to temporarily close

A Calgary daycare center has been forced to temporarily close after “several” live and dead cockroaches, mice and other health problems were discovered at the Mission site.

Alberta Health Services has ordered the closure of Sun Valley Kids Academy and Montessori Day Care, located at 100G – 2210 2nd St. SW, after discovering dozens of health violations.

The Daily Hive reached out to the aforementioned kindergarten, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

Report violations include:

  • Live and dead cockroaches were found in the kitchen food preparation area, including on the walls, under the sink and in the refrigerator.
  • There are cockroach remains in the kitchen cupboard and drawers
  • Mouse droppings were found throughout the facility, including the sleeping area, near the play kitchen, and near the hand-washing sink.
  • No hand soap in the kitchen sink
  • Staff are not properly equipped with food safety knowledge
  • Improper cleaning procedures for toys

There were a number of other violations identified in the report.

To reopen the facility, the order requires the owners to resolve a number of points:

  • Maintain pest control services
  • Remove all mouse droppings and cockroach droppings
  • Ensure hand washing facilities are always available
  • Replace torn diaper pads

The report was submitted on February 7 of this year.
