A Winnipeg filmmaker takes a unique approach to Lent with a new project

A local film director releases a project on the theme of “Lent”, which depicts the 14 stations of the cross in a unique way.

“In the Catholic tradition, we have a prayer called the Way of the Cross or the Stations of the Cross,” says Bisong Taiwo. “It describes the passion of Christ and it is divided into about 14 chapters. I made a cinematic version of it with a few twists.”

This movie Mary's Way of the Cross, taken from the perspective of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The twist comes with a modern take on Mary's emotions rather than a historical retelling.

“It's a contemplative, meditative piece,” says Taiwo.

Local actress Gloria Thompson portrays Mary in the film, the only person cast throughout the film.

“I thought of this idea in 2020, but then the pandemic happened. The idea also developed during this period.”

Taiwo hopes to have a public screening in Winnipeg within the next 40 days. Anyone interested in watching the film through 14 stations and attending the public screening can follow Taiwo on his website.
