The Senators returned from a 10-day layoff to beat the Maple Leafs 5-3

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Shane Pinto had a goal and two assists and the Ottawa Senators beat Toronto 5-3 on Saturday night in a game in which Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Reilly was checked for a hit on Ridley Greig. empty net.

Claude Giroux, Vladimir Tarasenko and Josh Norris scored for Ottawa in their return from a 10-day layoff. Joonas Korpisalo made 31 saves.

Greig scored with 5.1 seconds left, running down the middle and hitting a short-range shot into the empty net. As the Ottawa player was turning the boards toward the bench, Reilly hit him high with a rebound.

“We didn't like the empty net result,” Toronto captain John Tavares said. “Then we will stick together and hold our ground when necessary.”

Reilly received a major penalty for cross-checking and a game violation. Toronto sent defenseman Ryan Reaves on the last play, but officials quickly jumped in to prevent a scuffle.

“You never know what Granger is going to do,” Norris said. “I love him, but I'm sure if we were on the other side of him, I don't know if we'd want him either. I didn't like the revenge, but I understand that they were upset, but it's over and I think it was fun.”

Auston Matthews scored his 42nd NHL goal for Toronto. Matthew Nice and Max Domi also scored and Martin Jones stopped 27 shots.

“We missed a lot of opportunities. Maybe we could have scored more goals than we did tonight,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “And we didn't. That's how we win the game.”

Pinto gave Ottawa a 3-2 lead in the second and Norris scored with 4:47 left. Domi scored for Toronto early in the third period.

“I thought it was a really good effort,” Senators interim coach Jacques Martin said. “I thought we slowed down, but I guess that's to be expected after 10 days off and not playing.”
