The Montreal company will light up the crowd at the Super Bowl

As 60,000 people cheered during the Superbowl at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night, the lights each spectator wore became part of the show.

Making this magic starts at Pixmob's offices in Montreal.

“When you light up an audience, you get a reaction from the crowd. You get that excitement, that joy from the crowd,” said Pixmob Lead Programmer Nicolas Collier-Fournier.

The technology is used in all forms of live broadcasting, from concerts to games.

Last month at the Verdun Auditorium, Pixmob opened the home of the Montreal team of the Professional Women's Hockey League.

And on Sunday, they covered the biggest sporting event of the year.

“There's always pride, we're a proud company. We're proud of what we do,” Coallier-Fournier told CTV News.

It is an ever-evolving technology.

“We have two proprietary protocols,” he explained. “One is radio frequency, so it's radio, (a) much simpler effect, and we're also patenting an infrared protocol.”

The infrared light in the stadium is aimed at any part of the audience and creates shapes. Wearable lights are attached to toques, wristbands and badges.

After the show, the audience returns the gadgets as they leave. Eventually, they are returned to Montreal to be cleaned and recycled.

Caollier-Fournier is proud and humbled to be able to bring Montreal to stages around the world.

“We don't take some things for granted.”
