The Calgary Flames' Jacob Markstrom trade offer didn't sit well with one insider

The NHL trade deadline is March 8. And the Calgary Flames are in trade talks, with goaltender Jacob Markstrom emerging as a key figure in recent negotiations.

According to insider reports in Saturday's edition of Hockey Night Canada's headlines, the Flames have discussed a trade for Markstrom with the New Jersey Devils.

Sportsnet's Elliott Friedman broke the news. He said despite the Flames' win over the Devils earlier in the week, both teams remained tight-lipped about the talks. Friedman said there have been legal conversations between the two sides regarding the possibility of Markstrom transferring to New Jersey.

Friedman shared:

“We will go forward with Jacob Markstrom. Now, the Flames and Devils played earlier this week. The flame overcame them. It's my understanding that the two teams will not comment, there were legitimate conversations between the two teams about the Calgary goalie before the game.”

“Now, I'd like to clarify a couple of things here. The first: I don't know if this was brought up to Markstrom, so I don't know if he was involved, but I think the two teams talked. It's very important and I think there were several issues.”

“One, of course, was the package to get it, and the other was to keep it. Now, is that possible? I heard it was very, very difficult to do, and it stayed put. But both of them, I think, had some important conversations and that it would take off. We'll see, but it sounds like it's only today, Ron.

Markstrom, a 34-year-old experienced goaltender, is a key player for the Flames. He will sign a six-year contract worth $6 million and has a full no-movement clause. The contract allows Markstrom to control his destination until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Jacob Markstrom led the Flames to their fourth straight win

Jacob Markstrom made a perfect 35 saves for the Calgary Flames in a 5-2 win against the New York Islanders on Saturday. However, he failed to score twice.

Markstrom said:

“Twice in one game and neither of them got past the hash marks, so I have to work on my wrist curls.”

Nevertheless, Markstrom's exceptional goaltending has played a key role in the Flames' recent success, making it four consecutive victories. In his last four NHL games, he has stopped 125 of 131 shots for a 1.50 goals-against average and two assists with a .954 save percentage.
