Insp. Tim Arsenault said the 29-year-old man remains in custody and that he knows all of the victims, adding that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Arsenault says five bodies were found in three locations.

Police first encountered the scene around 7:30 a.m., when a woman's body was found in a ditch on the side of Highway 3 outside the city of Carman.

At 10 a.m., police said a witness pulled the bodies of three children from a burning car on Highway 248.
